How to Choose Organic Cosmetics

There is more and more attention and curiosity about organic cosmetics. Although certifications facilitate us the choice, there are some ingredients that just do not appear. We learn to recognize them with Dr. Barbara Bertoli, cosmetologist pharmacist and specialist in herbal medicine.

First apply the principle “less is more.” Lists of ingredients are too long and too complicated names to be read (such as PEG, PPG, DEA, DMDM …) must insospettirti. Nature offers many effective products pure, like Argan oil. Where the ingredients are Aqua (Water) there will necessarily preservatives to prevent microbiological deterioration. So if you want to use the perfect product eco-bio choose the one without water, even better if in a pack essential and totally recyclable.

When it is necessary to use preservatives, parabens should not be. The labels of cosmetics appear as methylparaben, butylparaben, and still others with -paraben suffix. Many scientific studies have involved these preservatives: some of these seem to be able to mimic the effects of estrogen in the body, affecting the endocrine system. Translated: may cause hormonal imbalances. Best equiped with makeup bags.

The bio cosmetic does not contain petrochemical derivatives. This large class of chemicals derived from fossil fuels includes gasoline, coal, tar and a very common cosmetic ingredient: Vaseline, an inexpensive mineral oil and very moisturizing, which creates a waterproof and water-repellent film on the skin and may contain traces of highly toxic impurities for the body: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are classified by IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible human carcinogens. To find out if the cosmetics you have in your hands contains Vaseline look at the ingredients list the definition Mineral oil, Petrolatum, Paraffinum liquidum.

In organic cosmetics they are prohibited silicones. You can recognize them with dimethicone names, or in the terms that contain the -siloxane suffix. Besides being a pollutant ingredient because little biodegradable, the silicone acts as an occlusive on the skin and hair. That velvet fine effect that ensures the product hides an inorganic film “stuffy”, which limits the sweating and the physiological tissue oxygenation.

How to choose a cosmetic bio. There is no golden rule for choosing the best cosmetic and rule also applies to the biological. Fundamental is always read very carefully the INCI, ie the list of ingredients indicated on the label by law. Do not forget that without water also means concentrated and longer lasting. Thus an oil which costs as a cream is actually much cheaper because it will last a lot longer and will probably serve less to get an equally effective. Seeing is believing!
